7 Fundamentals for a Perfect Blog Post

How to write the perfect blog post, now that's one awesome task! It's not like doing a tweet or a Facebook post, so I thought I should do some research. I am sure we would all love to have the "perfect" blog post - but how do you quantify what is perfect?

No doubt there are more than seven features that will create the perfect blog post, but I think that the seven we will discuss here will be sufficient to cover the most important elements.

1. Headline

2. Storytelling

3. Number of characters

4. Images

5. Subheadings

6. Post length

7. Sharing

What is the perfect headline?

Only 20% of those that read your headline will go on to read the rest of the article, so your headline will often be the make or break for all of your posts. So what is a great headline?

Readers tend to scan headlines, so the first three words and the last three words need to stand out as much as possible. Of course, very few headlines are just six words in length, so the above sentence is of great importance and should be considered when thinking about the headline.

Outside the specific numbers, there is a large amount of information on the techniques for writing a great headline. At the last count there were about 56 million search results. What is now recognised is there is a link between psychology and the written word, so what makes one headline so irresistible that you have to click? Well apparently there are 8 approaches that are backed by psychology.

1. Surprise - "This seizes our attention and then curiosity holds it"

2. Questions - "Just simply asking a question our brains gets stimulated; also ask a question that the reader can identify with?"

3. Curiosity gap - "humans are by nature inquisitive, so when there is a gap in our knowledge we feel deprived"

4. Negatives - "negative words seem to tap into our insecurities"

5. How to - "what people want is a sense of order to their lives"

6. Numbers - "humans like certainty and dislike uncertainty, numbers offer the fore mentioned"

7. Audience referencing - "this gives the reader a feel of being known, as though you are addressing them personally"

8. Specificity - "being specific draws on our urges to know what's going to happen next"

Reviewing high traffic blogs and the headlines used can go a long way to helping you develop the skills necessary to create perfect headlines.

Numbers + Adjective + Target Keyword + Rationale + Promise

There are numerous hints and tips for writing great headlines, just evaluate and improve. Remember the 20% only read the post after reading the headline.

Telling a Story

So you have a compelling headline so the reader clicks through, now you need to hook them with the introduction. Research suggests that posts that told a story had a significant increase in the time a reader spent on the page, 520% more, to be exact.

You should try to add an aspect of storytelling in every post created, we can begin a blog post with a personal story or a period of candidness. As you can see storytelling plays a vital role.

Images Reduce Need for Words

Images are tremendously important, as they draw the interest of the reader with an eye catching visual. There is also another motive for the image, too. Characters per line.
